Bangkok
World Book Capital...Moving forwards
to increase the reading habit
To
meet its commitments to the United Nations, Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) under the Bangkok World Book Capital award, the
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) with the cooperation of more than 100
reading promotion networks, is moving forward with its campaigns to promote
reading among Thai people and encourage each and every one to read an average
of 15 books every year.
Diverse
reading activities have been created to promote substance, entertainment and sharing.
The activities, which are being organised throughout this year and next on the
concept Reading through the City, offers the chance to people of all ages,
and especially children and young people, to participate free of charge.
The
reading promotion networks have created libraries in universities and schools, as
well as learning libraries, libraries for the blind, community libraries and
mobile libraries. They have also made books available in BMTA buses and taxis, in
TK Park's library and have organised reading corners in various office buildings
to encourage employees and the public to enjoy reading.
In
addition, a variety of reading activities are being held in shopping centres, communities,
book fairs and within various organisations. More information about the
activities can be found at www.BangkokWorldBookCapital2013.com and the bkwbc2013
page on Facebook.
Between
July 17 and 23, families poured into the Queen Sirikit National Convention
Centre for the 2nd Family's Book Festival. The BMA was honoured by the
presence of Gen Surayud Chulanont, who presided over the opening ceremony. The
activities included measurement of reading level, sharing reading, astrology, a
wonderful wheel, hidden code book, puzzles, posting and sharing photos, DIY
workshops on handmade books, bookmarks, and cards, as well as the tales in
paper garden festival. These activities were all designed to stir the
imagination and strengthen the foundation of the family through encouraging all
family members to cultivate the reading habit. The event also enabled the
families to have fun learning and widen the seamless world of thinking through
the characters.
A
panel discussion titled 4Gens City Reading was held by Chulalongkorn
University Alumni Association on July 6 at Sasin Graduate Institute of Business
Administration. Readers, authors and those involved in the book business joined
members of four generations - Gen B (45-63 years old), Gen X (30-44 years old,
Gen Y (9-29 years old) and Gen Z (1-16 years old) in brainstorming on how to
develop reading as a culture and encourage the Thai people to read more.
To
mark Asarnha Bucha Day (Dharma Day), the 16th book offerings festival was held
on July 19 in front of Amarin Plaza, Ratchaprasong. The books were then donated
to the Princess Mother's Medical Volunteer Foundation to support remote schools
nationwide. The book friend network also organised a books distribution in
various areas of Bangkok. Find out more at the bookfriendnetwork page on
Facebook.
With
the aim of creating new readers, a campaign known as elders invite youth to
read throughout the city is being organised throughout July and August and
invites children, youth and members of the public to participate in the explore
learning source...open a door into reading activity at BMA's Learning Library.
On
July 12 at Thung Kru Learning Library, actress Parita Pla Kosolsak from TV Channel
7 joined a panel discussion titled I do Idol to inspire a love for reading
and build awareness among children and youth in the value of reading.
On
July 15, children met an author and cartoonist at Huai Khwang Learning Library,
opening the world of reading to children through fun cartoons.
On
August 2, youngsters will meet authors of short stories and well-known childrens
literature along with BMA staff at Khlong Samwa Learning Library. The discussion
will focus on attracting children to pay attention to books and look at ways of
overcoming laziness in reading. The children will also be asked to come up with
ideas and local viewpoints on the lifestyle of Khlong Samwa residents through a
Bog Book.
A
guest artist with a special talent for fun tale-telling will seek to entertain
the little ones in a talk on the art of reading at Bang Khun Tien Learning
Library.
In
the month that sees Thailand celebrating Mother's Day, several reading promotion
activities on the theme of mother are being organised. They include book
offerings, good books for mom, a Mother's Day library in BMA's community
library, and book recommendations for mothers and children to join in reading.
The
reading promotion campaign on the theme reading throughout the city is not
designed to change quiet reading into a more noisy affair but rather demonstrates
the efforts of the BMA and reading promotion networks to enhance the reading
habits of Thai society.
It
doesnt matter where or when you prefer to pick up a book of any type and size
or whether you opt for offline or online, just start reading and ask the people
around you to read. Whichever way you choose, you will be astounded at the
value of the written page.
